Assistant Professor in Computational Linguistics
We invite applications for an assistant professor position in the field of computational linguistics. The position is for 4 years, with a tenure decision by the end of the 3rd year. The assistant professorwill be a member of the Business Intelligence and Smart Services Institute (http://www.biss-institute.nl) (for 4 days/week) and will be affiliated to the Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering (http://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/web/Schools/DKE.htm) at Maastricht University (for 1 day/week). He/she will be working in a lively, attractive environment where researchers from related fields such as artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning and computer science cooperate with each other and with industry partners of BISS.

The assistant professor will have a set of tasks related to research, education and application development in the context of natural language processing. As an indication, the typical workload will be 30% education and 70% research, of which a significant part is in collaboration with industry. The embeddedness in both BISS and DKE and the direct link to industry makes this a particularly attractive professor position.

Requirements
Candidates are expected to have:
• A PhD degree in a field relevant to computational linguistics, such as computer science or artificial intelligence;
• A strong expertise in natural language processing and/or speech recognition, with possible specializations in one or several related topics such as understanding of text or spoken language based on deep learning, speech synthesis, voice user interfaces, text-to-speech systems, answer/dialogue generation, and text/speech-based sentiment analysis.
• A good track record of scientific journal/conference publications;
• An interest in formal aspects as well as in building advanced practical applications based on available state-of-the-art methods and tools;
excellent interpersonal and team skills, including the ability to interact with scientists, corporates, SME’s, Start-Ups and stakeholders in the public sector; experience in teaching classes in English at the bachelor and/or master level; and very good English language skills.
• Experience in acquiring research funding, a self-motivational attitude, scientific ambition, and demonstrated leadership skills are considered a plus. As collaboration with industry will be mostly on processing texts written in Dutch, a good command of Dutch language is an advantage.

Employment conditions
Salary scale 11 (or preliminary scale 10) based on experience plus an 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance. Non-Dutch applicants could be eligible for a favourable tax treatment (30% rule). Lecturer-researcher / PhD Candidate Knowledge-intensive Business Process and Smart Services
As a PhD candidate/lecturer-researcher, you will be part of a knowledge team that contributes to developing the Business Intelligence and Smart Services knowledge domain which carries out applied research in an interdisciplinary setting. In this position, you will carry out applied research in collaboration with business and industry, other schools, lecturers, associate professors, and students with the aim of answering fascinating questions of relevance to the field. The Centre of Research works closely with the Brightlands Business Intelligence and Smart Services Institute (BISS) to further develop this area of research.

Tasks and responsibilities
The vacancy includes the following tasks and responsibilties
• Carrying out doctoral research in the field of knowledge-intensive business processes and smart services (min. 0.6 FTE); 
• Presenting research results at international symposia, conferences, and workshops; 
• Publishing academic articles together with fellow researchers; 
• Creating practical products or services together with companies or entrepreneurs; 
• Depending on the profile of the candidate, participating in other research projects at BISS / IRM and teaching at the Faculty of  Commercial and Financial Management at Zuyd University of Applied (0.2 – 0.4 FTE).

The PhD research will center on the question how decisions (and underlying) business rules elicitated from data can be integrate (harmonized) with decisions (and underlying) business rules elicitated from laws and regulations. The project has a multidisciplinary focus, bringing together insights from information science, services marketing, user experience design and communication science. Ultimately, it should lead not just to insights that are relevant to academia, but also to concrete tools and techniques that organizations can apply when developing smart services. 

For the duration of the PhD project (4 years), the candidate will be part of the IRM Research Centre at Zuyd as well as the newly-formed institute for Business Intelligence and Smart Services (BISS), which is described below. The candidate will be stationed in Heerlen, The Netherlands.

Requirements
Candidates are expected to have
• A master’s degree (preferably a research master) in economics, artificial intelligence, business informatics’ or a related field; 
• A clear motivation for wanting to pursue a PhD; 
• Demonstrable knowledge of (applied) research methods and statistics; 
• Good written and verbal communication skills in English; 
• The ability to work in and contribute to a multidisciplinary team.

Employment conditions
We offer a position for the duration of the PhD project (4 years). The salary will be commensurate with education and experience, but will not exceed a maximum of scale 11 of the CAO-HBO, i.e. a maximum € 4,661.12 gross per month at 1.0 FTE. The Zuyd terms of employment have been set out in the collective bargaining agreement for the higher vocational education sector (CAO-HBO). 
For internal candidates, the current employment duration will be maintained.
