Speaker:
Prof. Gijs van Dijck
Van Dijck is an empirical legal scholar who specializes in tort law, insolvency law, and contract law. He uses empirical legal research methods and data sciences methods, network analysis in particular, to analyze legal issues.
Access to legal information such as legislation and case law is crucial for applying the law consistently and justly. However, with an overflow of information it is difficult to keep track of changes in the law and to determine what the law is. Already in a small country like the Netherlands, courts of first instance handle almost 800,000 private law cases. In addition, European courts (CJEU, ECHR) produce thousands of cases on a yearly basis.
In this webinar we will discuss how artificial intelligence is and can be deployed for retrieving legal information, whether it is for finding similar documents, searching for landmark cases, and for outcome prediction. Topics will include natural language processing, network analysis, and prediction algorithms. We will also show you what technologies are available and how they can affect the practice of law.
This webinar is offered to you by the Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS), the Maastricht Law & Tech Lab and the Brightlands Smart Services Campus.
