Desiderio investigates the dynamics of perception and action in complex environments through the analysis of human interaction with novel technologies such as virtual reality. Aiming to elucidate how the processes of digitalisation and smart society technologies can influence cognition and behaviour through mechanisms of multisensory integration and augmented perception. The objective is to implement a multi-sectoral approach promoting co-creation by combining scientific methods, entrepreneurial initiatives and governmental strategies.
Desiderio’s research is focusing on questions like ‘How to optimise the use of emerging digital technologies to benefit self-efficacy, quality of life and mobility independence among healthy and diseased populations?’ and ‘How to implement theories of gamification to motivate and engage people into more healthy and satisfying daily life activities?’. But also questions like ‘Can virtual and augmented reality technologies help us to adopt behavioural changes and influence personal and group decision-making?’ and ‘Can we develop methods of pattern recognition to derive emotions from physiological data collected through smart sensors and smart apps?’.
