Dr. Hannes Westermann
Assistant Professor
Hannes is an Assistant Professor of Law and Artificial Intelligence at Maastricht University and the Maastricht Law and Tech Lab. He has a background in law, artificial intelligence and the development of digital tools for access to justice.
At BISS, Hannes explores how AI and generative AI can support legal reasoning and make legal technology more accessible to law students, legal professionals and the wider public. He previously developed JusticeBot, an AI-based platform that helps people understand their legal rights and has been used more than 50,000 times. His research has received multiple international awards and has been featured in the Financial Times.
